Neonatal jaundice, a form of hemolytic jaundice, frequently affects newborns. This occurs because the rapid breakdown of fetal red blood cells after birth overwhelms the immature liver's capacity to process the resulting excess bilirubin. This buildup causes the characteristic yellowing of the skin and eyes associated with jaundice.
