Question:medium

Read the passage and answer the question.

Passage (extract): We have seen, in our time, attempts to achieve a kind of egalitarian society and the picture of it after it was achieved. But this was done, by and large, through the use of physical force. It may even be that, like a gas kept confined within containers under great pressure, or water held back by a big dam, once the barrier breaks, the reaction will one day sweep back with a violence equal in extent and intensity to what was used to establish and maintain the outward egalitarian form. This enforced egalitarianism contains, in its bosom, the seed of its own destruction.

According to the passage, people ultimately overturn a social order

Show Hint

Think about what the gas in a container and the water behind a dam stand for.

The Correct Option is A

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Understanding the Question:
The blank asks for the type of social order that finally gets thrown out. So we need the cause of a revolt as the passage describes it.

Step 2: Key Formula or Approach:
When a passage uses an extended image, that image usually carries the argument. Read the image, name its parts, then map them to the options.

Step 3: Detailed Explanation:
The image here is a gas in a container under great pressure, and water held back by a big dam. Both parts are the same idea: something is being pushed down by an outside force.
Name the parts. The gas or water is the people's urge to possess. The container or dam is the force used to hold the equal looking order in place. The bursting is the revolt.
The writer then states the rule outright: the reaction sweeps back "with a violence equal in extent and intensity to what was used to establish and maintain the outward egalitarian form". More force to hold it down means a bigger burst later.
So the order that gets overturned is the one that was forced. In the words of the options, that is coercion and oppression, option (A).
Option (B) blames unmet basic needs, but the passage nowhere talks about needs, only about possessions and material satisfaction. Option (C) names conciliation, which is a voluntary agreement, and the whole passage backs the voluntary route as the lasting one. Option (D) uses the passage's spiritual values idea but pins a revolt on it, which the writer never does.

Step 4: Final Answer:
An order held together by coercion and oppression is the one people overturn, so option (A) is correct.
