Question:medium

Read the passage and answer the question.

Passage (extract): The work which Gandhiji had taken up was not only regarding the achievement of political freedom but also the establishment of a new social order based on truth and non-violence, unity and peace, equality and universal brotherhood and maximum freedom for all. A new order cannot be established without radically changing the mind and attitude of men towards property and, at some stage or the other, the 'haves' have to yield place to the 'have-nots'. We have seen, in our time, attempts to achieve a kind of egalitarian society and the picture of it after it was achieved. But this was done, by and large, through the use of physical force. It may even be that, like a gas kept confined within containers under great pressure, or water held back by a big dam, once the barrier breaks, the reaction will one day sweep back with a violence equal in extent and intensity to what was used to establish and maintain the outward egalitarian form. This enforced egalitarianism contains, in its bosom, the seed of its own destruction. If egalitarianism is to endure, it has to be based not on the possession of the maximum material goods by a few or by all but on voluntary, enlightened renunciation of those goods which cannot be shared by others or can be enjoyed only at the expense of others.

According to the passage, egalitarianism will not survive if

The Correct Option is B

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Understanding the Question:
The stem is a negative condition question. It does not ask what helps equality, it asks what finishes it off. So we hunt for the sentence in the passage where the writer predicts a breakdown.

Step 2: Key Formula or Approach:
In a reading comprehension of this kind, match the stem verb with the passage verb. The stem verb is "survive". The passage has two survival words: "endure" and "destruction". Both point to the same pair of sentences, so read only those two carefully.

Step 3: Detailed Explanation:
Sentence one: "This enforced egalitarianism contains, in its bosom, the seed of its own destruction." The subject here is enforced egalitarianism, and enforced means brought about by physical force, which the writer had named a line earlier.
Sentence two: "If egalitarianism is to endure, it has to be based ... on voluntary, enlightened renunciation."
Put them side by side and the writer's rule is plain. Force leads to destruction, voluntary renunciation leads to endurance.
The image of gas under pressure and water behind a dam is there to make the same point. Force does not remove the urge to possess, it only bottles it up, and a bottled thing bursts.
Now test the choices. Option (A) names voluntary renunciation, which is the writer's recipe for lasting, so it is inverted. Option (C) talks about the underprivileged taking part, which the passage nowhere makes a condition. Option (D) talks about outlook not changing, but the passage attaches that idea to establishing a new order and attaches it to attitudes towards property, not towards egalitarianism itself. Option (B) is the only one sitting on the destruction sentence.

Step 4: Final Answer:
Equalitarian order built by force is the one the passage says will not last, so option (B) is correct.
