WHY BOOKS STILL MATTER
By a Student
In a world crowded with screens, it is easy to underestimate the quiet power of a book. Yet books remain one of the most valuable tools for learning and growth that humanity possesses.
A book does not merely give information; it builds understanding. Reading a novel teaches empathy by letting us live inside another person's mind. Reading history teaches humility by showing how much has already been tried and learnt. Reading science teaches curiosity by revealing how much remains unknown.
Books also train the mind to focus — something increasingly rare today. Following a long argument or a complex story strengthens concentration and memory in ways short online posts cannot.
Finally, books are democratic: a public library gives a poor student the same access to great ideas as anyone else. For all these reasons, however technology advances, the habit of reading books deserves to be protected and encouraged in every young life.
