Helper T (TH) cells are a type of white blood cell crucial for adaptive immune responses. Key functions include:
• Promoting B cell proliferation and differentiation into antibody-producing plasma cells.
• Activating and expanding cytotoxic T (Tc) cells via cytokines. Tc cells are responsible for directly eliminating infected or tumor cells.
• Enhancing macrophage phagocytic and microbicidal activity through cytokines.
TH cells themselves are not cytotoxic. Cytotoxicity is a primary function of cytotoxic T cells, not helper T cells. Cytotoxic T cells have CD8+ receptors, whereas TH cells have CD4+ receptors.
