From the 14th to the 16th century, the Vijayanagara Empire was a significant empire in South India. Its capital bore the same name, Vijayanagara. Harihara and Bukka Raya of the Sangama dynasty established the empire in the 14th century. The empire's reach covered a substantial area of South India, though its extent did not strictly lie between the Kaveri and Tungabhadra rivers. The empire concluded in the 16th century following the 1565 Battle of Talikota.
