Myelinated axons transmit action potentials via saltatory conduction, with the signal jumping between Nodes of Ranvier. The myelin sheath acts as an insulator, preventing signal dissipation and greatly increasing nerve impulse speed. This mechanism is more efficient than continuous conduction in unmyelinated fibers.
