Look at it region by region and then average out. States with intensive mechanized farming, like Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, already use tractors and machines for nearly 80-90% of farm operations.
But large parts of eastern India, the hill states and rainfed regions still depend heavily on bullock power and manual labour, which pulls the national figure down a lot.
When these very different regional numbers are averaged across the whole country, agricultural statistics repeatedly quote India's overall farm mechanization level at roughly 40-45%, well below the 75-80% seen in fully mechanized economies and only a little above the 20-25% mark of very low mechanization.
