The author was deeply attached to his pet. When he couldn't find his cat after the fire, he cried uncontrollably. In hopes of finding her, he would often visit the site of his burned-down house. He remembered how the cat would sneak into his pocket, fall asleep, and he expressed how much he missed her.
The cat had fled the house, a mile away, after being terrified by the fire. She was found and taken in by a woman. On the cat's collar, the woman discovered the author's phone number. However, she couldn't reach them because the fire had disconnected the phone line. The woman then took it upon herself to search for the author and returned the cat to him.
