Outcomes of Escapism and Apathy
Sophie, in *Going Places*, is a fantasist with unrealistic goals and daydreams. She uses these to escape her ordinary life, dreaming of meeting football star Danny Casey. Her unrealistic desires result in disillusionment and a disconnect from the real world. Likewise, Franz, in *The Last Lesson*, displays disinterest in education, often skipping school. His lack of concern for learning makes him appreciate education only after it is lost—when French instruction is halted due to Prussian rule. Both characters experience negative effects from their behavior—Sophie finds herself disappointed, and Franz is remorseful for wasted chances. Their narratives underscore the significance of practicality and accountability in life.
