Types of Elements that Make Up the Xylem Tissue
Xylem Tissue Composition:
Xylem is a type of complex tissue in plants responsible for the transport of water and minerals from the roots to other parts of the plant. Xylem is made up of four types of elements, each with a specific role in the transportation and support system of the plant.
The Four Types of Elements in Xylem:
- Tracheids: Long, tapering cells with thick walls. They help in the conduction of water and provide mechanical support. Water passes from one tracheid to another through small pits in the cell walls.
- Vessels: Shorter and wider than tracheids, vessels are the main conduits for water transport in angiosperms (flowering plants). They consist of stacked cells that form long tubes through which water flows.
- Xylem Fibers: These are thick-walled cells that provide structural support to the plant. Although they do not directly conduct water, they contribute to the strength and rigidity of the xylem tissue.
- Xylem Parenchyma: These are living cells with thin walls that store starch and other nutrients. They help in the lateral transport of water and also contribute to the storage of food in the xylem tissue.
