The woodpecker gets her food by pecking on tree trunks and branches. She uses her strong, pointed beak to drill into the bark of trees, searching for insects such as ants, termites, and beetles that live under the surface. The woodpecker’s sharp beak and tongue help her extract the food from deep within the wood. This method of foraging allows the woodpecker to access food that is hidden from other animals. The constant tapping on tree bark also serves to mark her territory and communicate with other woodpeckers.
