The mesh screen on a microwave oven door is designed as a Faraday shield. The holes in the metal mesh are much smaller than the wavelength of $2.45\text{ GHz}$ microwaves ($\lambda \approx 12.2\text{ cm}$), allowing visible light to pass through while completely blocking and containing the microwave energy.
