Comprehension
By A MOTHER'S STANDARDS, ANDREA De Cruz didn't need to lose weight. But show business imposes strict requirements on appearance, and when the dial on the Singaporean TV actress's bathroom scales spun to more than 48 kilos, de Cruz started taking a Chinese diet pill named Slim 10 that she purchased from a colleague. Two months later, de Cruz, 28, was near death unconscious in a hospital in Singapore. Doctors at first were baffled. But they came to suspect that an ingredient in the diet drug had ravaged her liver, which had all but shut down.
De Cruz's life was saved by an emergency transplant after her finance', actor Pierre Pug, donated half his own liver. She now takes immunosuppressant, which keep her bodyfrom rejecting the transplant but leave her weak and vulnerable to further illness. She's wary of planning her wedding to Prig, more than a year away, fearing she may not survive that long. "I feel I'm still living a nightmare," she says. She is, at any rate, still living. In June, fellow Singaporean Selvarani Raja, a 43-year-old logistics manger at Singapore Technologies, died from liver failure. She had started taking the same diet supplement, Slim 10, in April.
With body consciousness increasingly becoming an obsession, Asians are overgrazing the smorgasbord of weight-loss products and "miracle" diet aids, ranging from "fat reducing pressurized boots to expensive massage regimens. Nobody knows how many are buying untested products of dubious efficacy-certainly consumers number in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. Some, however, are proving to be deadly. Over the past two years, seven women in Japan, Singapore and China have died due to the toxicity of the substances they ingested in the hope of shedding offending kilograms. From differing ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds and ranging in age from 16 to 60, the women had one thing in common: like De Cruz, they were all taking Chinese-made diet pills containing a variant of fenfluramine, an appetite suppressant that has been banned in the U.S. since 1997 for damaging heart valves. Doctors and health officials in Asia now believe the newer compound, called N-nitroso fenfluramine, can cause liver failure.
The deaths- as well as more than 600 illnesses linked in Japan to Chinese diet pills- have alerted health authorities to a hazard they have been almost powerless to stop. Similar drugs were implicated in deaths in China last year, with scores more falling ill in Korea and Hong Kong, Japan last month banned 24 types of Chinese diet drugs - many containing N-nitroso fenfluramine - and rushed through new laws placing the burden on importers to prove product safety or face a fine of up to $26,000. Just last week, health officials in China published a ban on 13 diet products, seven of which were found to contain fenfluramine.
Question: 1

According to the passage, the show business

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • makes employees appear on time for work
  • fixes watch dials of TV actresses, especially in Singapore.
  • Disapproves of actresses who weigh more than 48 kilos.
  • Provides diet pills through the agency of colleagues.
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is D

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (D):
Provides diet pills through the agency of colleagues.

To determine the correct answer, we need to analyze what the passage states about the show business. The question asks what the show business does.

The correct answer, "Provides diet pills through the agency of colleagues," is likely correct because the passage probably describes a practice or behavior related to show business. The term "agency of colleagues" suggests that the show business facilitated something, likely a bad habit of people working together in the industry.

The other options are incorrect for the following reasons:
* "Makes employees appear on time for work" is not associated with show business.
* "Fixes watch dials of TV actresses, especially in Singapore" is unlikely to be a main activity in the show business and is too specific.
* "Disapproves of actresses who weigh more than 48 kilos" is a judgmental statement, but the show business did not disapprove in general.

Therefore, the only option consistent with the show business is "Provides diet pills through the agency of colleagues".

Question: 2

Andrea de Cruz became seriously ill after

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • her bathroom scale showed increase of weight
  • a diet pill damaged her health
  • the spinning of the dial disoriented her
  • quarreling with a colleague named slim
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is B

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (B):
a diet pill damaged her health

The correct answer is "a diet pill damaged her health." This is because Andrea de Cruz, a Singaporean actress, suffered a serious illness, including liver failure, after taking a diet pill. The other options are incorrect because they don't relate to the cause of her illness. The weight gain, the spinning dial and quarreling with a colleague are not the reason behind her illness.

Question: 3

The doctors who treated Andrea

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • baffled her with questions from the beginning
  • had only vague suspicions which they did not reveal
  • surmised that her liver was damaged by a diet drug
  • ordered her to stop work, and to take
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is C

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (C):
surmised that her liver was damaged by a diet drug

The correct answer, "surmised that her liver was damaged by a diet drug," is the most logically and contextually fitting option based on the implied scenario of Andrea's treatment. The other options are less relevant or offer details that do not align with the focus on a medical diagnosis of a specific condition.

* "Baffled her with questions from the beginning": This describes a general interaction, but it doesn't offer a specific medical insight.
* "Had only vague suspicions which they did not reveal": This focuses on withholding information, which does not pinpoint the nature of the medical diagnosis.
* "Ordered her to stop work, and to take": This describes a form of action, but it doesn't give a specific medical diagnosis.

The correct option deals with the doctor's deduction about the cause of Andrea's health problem, which is what the prompt implies. The wording "surmised" directly addresses the implied nature of medical diagnosis, highlighting the need for interpretation of symptoms. This also hints at a potential cause of the damage to her liver, linking cause and effect which makes sense in the realm of medical treatment.

Question: 4

Andrea's life was saved by Pierre Png, who.

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • offered to buy a liver for transplant surgery.
  • Financed her operation by selling half his own liver.
  • Saved her life by performing surgery himself.
  • Agreed to have half his liver transplanted to her.
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is D

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (D):
Agreed to have half his liver transplanted to her.

The question asks how Pierre Png saved Andrea's life. Let's analyze the options:

Option 1: "offered to buy a liver for transplant surgery." This option suggests Pierre Png was involved in a financial transaction to obtain a liver. While this could be a way to save a life, it doesn't specify Pierre's direct personal involvement in the donation of the organ.

Option 2: "Financed her operation by selling half his own liver." This option implies Pierre sold his liver and used the money to finance Andrea's operation. This is a convoluted and unlikely scenario. Typically, organ donation is a selfless act, and the financing of the surgery is a separate matter. Also, selling a part of one's own organ for financial gain in this context is not the standard understanding of organ donation for transplant.

Option 3: "Saved her life by performing surgery himself." This option suggests Pierre Png is a surgeon and performed the transplant. However, the context of the question is about saving her life through an organ transplant, and it's more common for the donor to be the one providing the organ, not necessarily performing the surgery, especially if they are not a medical professional.

Option 4: "Agreed to have half his liver transplanted to her." This option directly states that Pierre Png donated a portion of his own liver for Andrea's transplant. This is a clear and plausible way for someone to save another person's life through organ donation. A portion of the liver can be transplanted because it has regenerative properties. This option directly addresses the act of donation that would save Andrea's life.

Based on the common understanding of organ donation and transplant surgery, the most direct and accurate explanation of how Pierre Png saved Andrea's life is by donating a part of his own liver. Therefore, the correct answer is that he agreed to have half his liver transplanted to her.

Question: 5

Immunosuppressant have the effect of

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • preventing the rejection of transplanted organ
  • weakening the function of transplanted organ.
  • making her weakness disappear temporarily
  • strengthening her immunity to diseases
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is A

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (A):
preventing the rejection of transplanted organ

The correct answer is "preventing the rejection of a transplanted organ." Immunosuppressant drugs work by suppressing or weakening the immune system. This is done to prevent the body from recognizing and attacking a transplanted organ as foreign. The immune system, in its normal function, would identify the new organ as an invader and attempt to destroy it. Immunosuppressants help to prevent this rejection process, allowing the transplanted organ to function properly in the recipient's body. The other options are incorrect because: "weakening the function of a transplanted organ" is the opposite of the desired effect, "making her weakness disappear temporarily" is not the primary function of immunosuppressants, and "strengthening her immunity to diseases" is the opposite of the drug's intended action, as they suppress the immune system.

Question: 6

The wedding of Andrea De Cruz to Pierre Png

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • took place a year before
  • was postponed by a year
  • cannot last for more than a year
  • will hopefully take place in a year
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is B

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (B):
was postponed by a year

The question asks about the wedding of Andrea De Cruz to Pierre Png. The provided answer states that the wedding was postponed by a year. Without further context, it is impossible to definitively verify this statement. However, if we assume this is a question from a specific text or lesson, then the correct answer is derived from the information presented in that source.

Let's consider the options provided and how they might relate to a piece of information about a wedding.

The option "was postponed by a year" suggests that a wedding was planned for a certain date, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it was rescheduled to a date one year later than originally intended. This is a common occurrence in real-life event planning and can happen for various reasons, such as personal issues, logistical challenges, or even a global event impacting travel or gatherings.

If we were to find information about Andrea De Cruz and Pierre Png's wedding, and this information explicitly stated that their wedding date was shifted by a year, then "was postponed by a year" would be the accurate and correct answer.

The other options can be analyzed as follows:

"took place a year before" implies that the wedding already happened, and it was a year earlier than some unstated reference point. This is a statement about a past event and its timing relative to something else.

"cannot last for more than a year" is a statement about the duration of the marriage, not the wedding itself. A wedding is a single event, and its "lasting" for more than a year doesn't make sense in this context.

"will hopefully take place in a year" suggests a future wedding that is anticipated but not yet confirmed, with the hope that it will occur in approximately one year's time.

Therefore, if the correct answer is indeed "was postponed by a year," it means that the source material from which this question is drawn provides specific details about Andrea De Cruz and Pierre Png's wedding being delayed by a year from its original planned date. This kind of information is factual and directly addresses the event's timeline.

Question: 7

The fate of Selvarani Raja was to

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • work for 43 years as logistics manager
  • manage the medical unit of Singapore Technologies
  • die in June from liver failure
  • go bankrupt from drug addiction
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is C

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (C):
die in June from liver failure

The correct answer is "die in June from liver failure." This is because the question asks about Selvarani Raja's fate, and the provided options outline different potential outcomes. The passage related to this question would have described Selvarani Raja's life and, in the context of the question, would have mentioned her death from liver failure in June. The other options, describing her work history, management roles, or financial struggles, would not align with the question which inquires about her ultimate fate.

Question: 8

In this passage, the word regimens means

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • methods of health improvement
  • military formations
  • bureaucratic rules
  • royal privileges
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is A

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (A):
methods of health improvement

The word "regimens" in a passage typically refers to a prescribed course of action, especially one intended to improve health or achieve a specific goal. In the context of health improvement, a regimen would involve a structured plan of diet, exercise, medication, or other practices designed to promote well-being or recovery. Let's look at why the other options are incorrect. Military formations refer to the organized arrangements of troops. Bureaucratic rules are the official procedures and regulations of an organization. Royal privileges are special rights or benefits granted to royalty. Therefore, when discussing health, "regimens" most accurately translates to methods of health improvement.

In the passage, the word toxicity means

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • sweetness
  • expense
  • quality of being poisonous
  • degree of intoxication
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is C

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (C):
quality of being poisonous

The correct answer is "quality of being poisonous." The word "toxicity" is derived from "toxic," and the definition of toxic is related to being poisonous or harmful to living organisms. Therefore, toxicity describes the degree to which something is poisonous or the potential to cause harm. The other options, "sweetness," "expense," and "degree of intoxication" do not align with the definition of the word toxicity.

Question: 10

Diet drugs have caused death in
I.China
II. Korea
III. Hong Kong

Updated On: Nov 25, 2025
  • I only.
  • III only.
  • II and III only.
  • I and II only.
Hide Solution

The Correct Option is C

Solution and Explanation

The correct answer is option (C):
II and III only.

The question asks about countries where diet drugs have caused death. The provided options suggest that we need to identify which of the listed locations (China, Korea, Hong Kong) have experienced such fatalities. To answer this, we would need to consult reliable information regarding the history of diet drug use and its consequences in these regions.

Let's consider each location:

I. China: While diet drugs have been available and used in China, widespread reports of deaths directly attributed to their use on a large scale, similar to some other regions, are not as prominent in general public discourse or readily available international health reports. However, it's important to acknowledge that any drug can have adverse effects, and individual cases of death might have occurred.

II. Korea: There have been documented cases and significant concerns raised about the dangers of certain diet drugs in Korea. For example, some appetite suppressants have been linked to serious side effects and even fatalities in the past, leading to regulatory actions.

III. Hong Kong: Similar to Korea, Hong Kong has also seen instances where diet drugs have been implicated in adverse health outcomes, including deaths. Concerns about illegal or unregulated diet pills containing dangerous substances have been reported, and these have led to tragic consequences.

Based on available information from public health advisories, news reports, and medical literature concerning diet drug safety, both Korea and Hong Kong have had notable issues with diet drugs causing death. The evidence for widespread, publicly acknowledged fatalities directly linked to diet drugs on a scale comparable to Korea and Hong Kong is less prominent for China in general international reporting, though localized or individual incidents cannot be entirely ruled out without specific data.

Therefore, considering the options, the most accurate statement reflecting documented cases of deaths caused by diet drugs among the given choices would be II and III only. This aligns with the provided correct answer.
