Question:easy

Bayer process is used for extraction of

Show Hint

To extract 1 ton of aluminium metal, approximately 4 to 5 tons of bauxite ore are processed to yield 2 tons of alumina, which is then electrolyzed.

  • Alumina
  • Zinc
  • Aluminum
  • Copper
Show Solution

The Correct Option is C

Solution and Explanation

Bauxite ore is never pure alumina, it also carries iron oxide, silica and titania, so it has to be purified before any metal can be pulled out of it. The Bayer process handles exactly this purification: hot caustic soda dissolves the aluminium oxide, the impurities are left behind as red mud, and pure alumina is later precipitated and calcined out. That alumina is only an intermediate though, it still needs electrolytic reduction to actually give metallic aluminium. Since the Bayer step is the essential first stage of the overall commercial route used to win aluminium metal, it is grouped under aluminium extraction, so the answer is aluminum, option (C).
