The Arden Index is a specific number that comes out of one electrophysiology test, so the trick is to recall which test reports a light-to-dark ratio. The electrooculogram is built around the standing potential between the front and back of the eye. When the patient sits in the dark this potential falls to a trough, and after a period in light it rises to a peak. Dividing the light peak value by the dark trough value and multiplying by a hundred gives the Arden ratio.
A healthy eye gives a ratio around 185 percent or higher. When the ratio drops well below this, it signals dysfunction at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium, which is the classic finding in Best vitelliform dystrophy where the EOG is markedly abnormal even when the ERG is normal.
The other choices do not generate this index. The electroretinogram describes retinal responses with a and b waves after a light flash. The visual evoked response measures signals at the visual cortex and is used in optic nerve disease. Perimetry is simply a map of the field of vision and involves no electrical potential ratio. So the Arden Index belongs only to the EOG.
