A can with a very tiny pinhole leak, usually along a seam, behaves differently from other spoiled cans. Air molecules are small enough to pass in and out through this leak, so the pressure inside stays balanced with the outside and the can never swells or bulges. Microorganisms, however, are far too large to squeeze through such a fine opening, so the food does not spoil from bacterial growth even though it may oxidise. This kind of small, breathing leak is called a breather.
