In areas such as Bombay and Madras, the British implemented the Ryotwari system. This approach facilitated direct tax collection from individual farmers (ryots), circumventing intermediaries like zamindars. The Ryotwari system permitted consistent reassessment and adjustment of land taxes based on productivity, resulting in increased revenue. Conversely, the Permanent Settlement fixed revenue indefinitely and offered limited scope for revenue enhancement.
