As the Janata Party leader, Morarji Desai became India's first non-Congress Prime Minister. His administration prioritized reinstating democratic freedoms and abrogating numerous Emergency-era policies. Despite internal strife, Desai's premiership temporarily interrupted the Congress party's long-standing political dominance.
