Drug identification: The image shows Mitomycin C vials (10 mg and 40 mg). Mitomycin C is an alkylating antibiotic that cross-links DNA and inhibits fibroblast proliferation and collagen deposition.
Topical Mitomycin C in ENT -- key uses:
- Subglottic stenosis: applied topically after endoscopic dilation to prevent re-stenosis by inhibiting fibroblast activity
- Tracheal stenosis post-tracheostomy
- Laryngeal stenosis
- FESS: applied to sinus ostia to prevent post-operative stenosis
- Septoplasty: to prevent synechiae
- Intubation granuloma
Why not the other options?
- Type I myringoplasty uses fascia or perichondrium grafts; no role for Mitomycin C
- Post-adenoidectomy bleeding: managed by electrocautery, packing, or re-ligation
- Rhino-cerebral mucormycosis: treated with IV amphotericin B and radical surgical debridement; Mitomycin C has no role
Memory tip: Mitomycin C = anti-fibrosis drug used wherever stenosis (scarring and narrowing) is the problem in ENT airway surgeries. \[\boxed{\text{Subglottic stenosis}}\]
