Prokaryotic cells, which are simple, single-celled organisms, are characterized by the absence of a membrane-bound nucleus and other organelles like mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum. Nevertheless, they possess ribosomes, the cellular machinery for protein synthesis. In contrast to eukaryotic cells, which feature a clearly defined, membrane-enclosed nucleus, prokaryotes house their genetic material in a single, circular chromosome within a region known as the nucleoid.Consequently, prokaryotic cells contain ribosomes but do not have membrane-bound organelles.
