Older refrigerators ran on Freon, a chlorofluorocarbon gas prized for cooling efficiently without catching fire. Once researchers linked CFC gases to a shrinking ozone layer, the world moved to phase them out under international agreements. Modern refrigerators now use HFCs or newer HFO refrigerants instead, since these break down without stripping away the ozone layer that shields the planet from harmful ultraviolet rays.
