India's oldest football event is the Durand Cup.
It was founded in 1888 by Sir Mortimer Durand, a British colonial officer. This makes it not just the oldest in India but also one of the oldest football competitions anywhere in the world.
Originally meant for army teams, the tournament grew over the years and now includes top domestic football clubs from across India.
