The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research sits at Kalpakkam, a coastal town in Tamil Nadu close to Chennai. Set up in 1971 under the Department of Atomic Energy, it leads India's work on fast breeder reactor technology. The centre plays a key role in the second stage of India's three-stage nuclear power programme, which aims to make full use of the country's thorium reserves.
