Conduction of electricity through a liquid depends on how many charged particles, called ions, are free to move in it.
- Pure water self ionizes only slightly, giving a very low concentration of \(H^+\) and \(OH^-\) ions.
- With so few ions available, pure water can barely carry any current, so calling it a good conductor or a super conductor is wrong.
- Add salt, acid or any dissolved mineral, and the number of free ions increases sharply, which is why tap water or salt solutions conduct electricity much better.
