The Richter scale measures the magnitude, or energy released, by an earthquake.
Charles Richter created this scale in the 1930s so that earthquakes of different strengths could be compared using a single number.
Because the scale is logarithmic, an earthquake rated 6 is far more powerful than one rated 5, not just slightly stronger. This scale became a standard reference point for describing earthquake strength worldwide.
