Several key actions promote women's involvement in public life, some of which are already used in India to improve gender equality:
- Local Body Seat Reservations (Panchayats and Municipalities): The 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments established seat reservations for women in Panchayats and Municipalities, guaranteeing them a set number of seats in local government. This allows women a political voice at the local level and enables them to participate in decisions about local governance, education, health, and social welfare.
- Legal and Policy Changes for Employment Gender Equality: The government passed laws like the Equal Remuneration Act (1976), ensuring equal pay for equal work. Also, policies have been created to encourage women's participation in all public sectors, including education, employment, and politics. These policies aim to close the gender pay gap and give women the same job opportunities as men.
