Comprehension
Social impact of social media
The social impact of social media is by far the biggest, as social media work through the formation of social networks by users in a virtual world. Its most significant impact is the formation of networks which span space and time and leads to the free-flowing of cultures and formation of new cultures which impacts the world. It has impacted how people consume information, how the consumption of media has gone from public to private and personal. However, on the flip side, social media work on algorithms. The information a user gets through social media is determined by the user preferences, which is self-declared by the user and detected by the algorithm. Hence, if one is an environmentalist, then one will get news and user-generated content on environmental activism. This selective exposure of information is harmful to the user as the user is not able to get alternate perspectives, for example, the trade-off between development and the environment. In politics, this can lead to things like political polarization, being associated with a political party or ideology which is detrimental to democracy. This is also what is called the ”echo chamber” effect. Meanwhile, research has also shown evidence that social media use leads to the persuasion of political beliefs, i.e., individuals who use social media were more likely to have their political beliefs persuaded than those who did not.
Question: 1

According to the passage, selective exposure of information leads to _______?

Show Hint

In reading comprehension, always look for direct evidence in the text to support your answer. Questions often test your ability to locate specific information and understand its direct implications.

  • Diverse information
  • Alternate perspective
  • Echo chamber effect
  • Development
Show Solution

The Correct Option is C

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Comprehend the Query
The query asks for the consequence of selective information exposure as per the provided text.

Step 2: Identify Pertinent Information
Locate the section discussing "selective exposure of information."
The text states, "This selective exposure of information is detrimental to the user as it impedes access to alternative viewpoints... This phenomenon is also referred to as the 'echo chamber' effect."

Step 3: Evaluate Options
(A) Diverse information: The text indicates selective exposure *hinders* alternative perspectives, contradicting diverse information. Incorrect.
(B) Alternate perspective: The text explicitly states selective exposure prevents users from obtaining alternate perspectives. Incorrect.
(C) Echo chamber effect: The text directly correlates selective exposure with the "echo chamber" effect. Correct.
(D) Development: The text uses the environment-development trade-off as an example of a missed alternate perspective but does not link selective exposure to development itself. Incorrect.

Step 4: Conclude Answer
According to the direct assertion in the text, selective information exposure results in the "echo chamber effect."

Question: 2

Social media functions on:

Show Hint

Pay close attention to keywords. The question asks what social media "functions on," and the passage uses the exact phrase "work on algorithms," making the connection direct and clear.
Updated On: Jan 16, 2026
  • Perspectives
  • Polarisation
  • Algorithms
  • Equations
Show Solution

The Correct Option is C

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Question Interpretation
The query seeks the operational foundation of social media as presented in the provided text.

Step 2: Information Retrieval
A sentence within the text explicitly details the operational mechanism of social media.
The relevant text states: "...on the flip side, social media work on algorithms."

Step 3: Option Evaluation
(A) Perspectives: While the text acknowledges that social media can restrict viewpoints, this is not its fundamental operational principle. Therefore, this option is incorrect.
(B) Polarization: Political polarization is identified as a result of social media's selective exposure feature, not its underlying function. Thus, this option is incorrect.
(C) Algorithms: The passage directly asserts that "social media work on algorithms." This aligns with the text and is the correct response.
(D) Equations: Although algorithms are composed of mathematical procedures potentially representable by equations, the passage specifically employs the term "algorithms." This makes "algorithms" the more accurate and direct answer derived from the text.

Step 4: Conclusion
The passage unequivocally states that social media operates based on algorithms.

Question: 3

Who determines the information which a user gets through social media?

Show Hint

For "who" or "what" questions, scan the text for verbs like "determines," "controls," "is caused by," etc. The subject or object of these verbs often holds the answer.

  • Private players
  • Media houses
  • Corporates
  • Social media user preferences
Show Solution

The Correct Option is D

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Comprehend the Inquiry
The inquiry seeks to identify the determinant of information displayed to a user on social media, as per the provided text.

Step 2: Identify Pertinent Passage Content
Locate the statement that elucidates the filtering mechanism of information for users.
The passage asserts: "The information a user receives via social media is dictated by their preferences, which are self-disclosed and algorithmically detected."

Step 3: Evaluate Choices
(A), (B), (C) Private entities, Media organizations, Corporations: Although these entities operate within and contribute to social media, the passage explicitly identifies a distinct factor for information *filtration* for individual users. Thus, these options are invalid.
(D) User-defined social media preferences: The passage directly links information determination to "user preferences." This is the accurate selection.

Step 4: Conclusive Response
Based on the provided text, the user's personal preferences are the decisive element governing the information they encounter on social media platforms.

Question: 4

Social media works through:

Show Hint

Differentiate between the mechanism (how something works) and the impact (what results from it). The question asks for the former. The first sentence often sets the stage by defining the core concept.
Updated On: Jan 16, 2026
  • Free flowing of cultures
  • Formation of new cultures
  • Social organization
  • Virtual social network
Show Solution

The Correct Option is D

Solution and Explanation

Phase 1: Comprehending the Inquiry
The inquiry concerns the operational method of social media.

Phase 2: Identifying Pertinent Data within the Text
The initial sentence of the text elucidates the functionality of social media.
It states, "...social media operate via the establishment of social networks by users within a virtual environment."

Phase 3: Evaluating the Choices
(A) Unrestricted cultural exchange: This is presented as an outcome or effect of social media, not its core operational principle.
(B) Emergence of novel cultures: This is also presented as an effect, not the operational principle.
(C) Societal structuring: This descriptor is excessively broad and does not align with the specificity in the text.
(D) Digital social framework: This option succinctly encapsulates "the establishment of social networks by users within a virtual environment." It precisely reflects the operational method detailed in the text.

Phase 4: Conclusive Determination
The text unequivocally establishes that social media functions through the construction of digital social frameworks.

Question: 5

What is the most significant impact of social media?

Show Hint

When a question uses superlatives like "most," "best," or "primary," look for sentences in the passage that make a similar claim or judgment. The answer is often stated explicitly.
Updated On: Jan 16, 2026
  • Formation of political organization
  • Formation of environmental activists
  • Formation of networks
  • Formation of economic chambers
Show Solution

The Correct Option is C

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Interpret the Query
The query requires identifying the "primary effect" of social media as detailed in the provided text.

Step 2: Extract Key Information from Text
Scan the text for phrases like "primary effect," "most significant consequence," or comparable terms.
The second sentence states, "Its most significant impact is the formation of networks which span space and time..."

Step 3: Evaluate Choices
(A) Establishment of political groups: The text mentions political division but not the formation of political groups as the primary effect.
(B) Cultivation of environmental advocates: Environmental advocacy is presented as an illustration of content filtering, not as the primary effect.
(C) Creation of networks: The text explicitly states that the "most significant impact is the formation of networks". This aligns with the identified primary effect.
(D) Development of commercial alliances: This is not referenced in the text.

Step 4: Conclude the Answer
The text directly designates the "formation of networks" as the principal consequence of social media.
