Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) was a flagship programme of the Government of India launched in 2001.
Its primary goal was the Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE).
Elementary Education in the Indian context covers the age group of 6 to 14 years, which corresponds to Classes I to VIII.
The scheme aimed to provide useful and relevant elementary education for all children in this age group.
The SSA has now been subsumed under the new integrated scheme for school education called Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.
