Riya is part of two types of groups: In-group and Out-group. Let's explain each of them with reference to the scenario.
1. In-group:
An in-group refers to a group with which an individual identifies and feels a strong sense of belonging. Members of the in-group share common interests, goals, values, and often form emotional bonds with each other.
- Example in the scenario: Riya's childhood family dance group represents her in-group. She feels a strong sense of belonging and emotional attachment to this group. This is because she identifies with the group, shares experiences, and has a deep emotional connection with the members. In-group members often communicate informally, share common experiences, and provide mutual support.
2. Out-group:
An out-group refers to a group that an individual does not identify with and may perceive as different or distinct from their in-group. When interacting with out-group members, individuals may follow formal rules and conventions, and the relationship is often based on roles and structured interactions rather than personal connection.
- Example in the scenario: Riya's school council represents her out-group. Even though she is a member, she follows the rules and communicates formally with the members. Her relationship with the school council is based on her role and responsibilities within the group, rather than an emotional connection like she has with her family dance group.
