Just before she died, the author’s grandmother behaved in a strange, unusual way. After welcoming him back from abroad, she suddenly stopped talking to the family and refused to discuss anything. She said that talking to them would be “wasting” the little time she had left and decided to spend all her remaining time praying on her beads. She lay down in bed, continued moving her fingers on the rosary and praying, and did not respond to anyone’s questions or requests, as if she had already withdrawn from the world and was calmly waiting for death.
