Scientists work out the age of the Earth using radioactive dating, mainly the uranium-lead method. Uranium atoms inside rocks decay into lead at a steady, well known rate that does not change with heat or pressure. By comparing the amounts of uranium and lead in a sample, geologists can calculate how much time has passed since the rock formed. Studies of the oldest rocks and meteorites using this method point to an Earth age of roughly 4.5 billion years.
