The Sangeet Ratnakar is a pivotal Sanskrit work on Indian music, authored by Sharngadeva in the 13th century. This text consolidates and enhances understanding of ancient musicology, bridging earlier works like the Natya Shastra and Brihaddeshi with subsequent traditions. It comprises seven chapters: Swara, Raga, Prabandha, Tala, Dance, Instruments, and Miscellaneous topics. The work delves into the categorization of swaras, ragas, talas, embellishments, and performance techniques. It has been a foundational text for both Hindustani and Carnatic music. Numerous later scholars and musicians studied and maintained its principles. Its extensive scope has earned it the designation 'Ocean of Music'.
