Reflex-chain logic. Esotropia means the eyes turn in. To find its refractive partner, follow the accommodation-convergence reflex: whenever the eye accommodates, it also converges, the two are yoked.
A hypermetrope is farsighted, so the eye is forced to accommodate hard just to bring images into focus, and harder still for near work. All that extra accommodation pulls extra convergence along with it, and the eyes drift inward, giving accommodative esotropia. Correcting the hyperopia with plus lenses often straightens the eyes, which proves the link.
Clear the distractors: a myope accommodates less and tends toward exotropia; an emmetrope has no refractive push; astigmatism causes blur, not a set convergent turn. The refractive error commonly tied to esotropia is therefore hypermetropia. Ref: AAPOS, Accommodative Esotropia.
