Prophase I of meiosis consists of five stages. A crucial event in zygotene is synapsis, in which homologous chromosomes pair, leading to bivalent formation. During pachytene, tetrads become visible and crossing over (genetic material exchange) takes place. Chiasmata, the visual evidence of crossing over, are observed in diplotene.
