A turbine blade coating has two competing jobs: block heat from reaching the metal underneath, and not crack off every time the engine heats up and cools down. Zirconia is attractive because it conducts heat very poorly, so it insulates well, and once stabilised with yttria its thermal expansion matches the nickel superalloy blade closely enough that the coating does not flake off during thermal cycling. Thoria carries radioactivity concerns, while calcium oxide and magnesia both absorb moisture from the air and degrade quickly in service. Weighing these properties against each other, zirconia remains the ceramic of choice for thermal barrier coatings, option (D).
