Awadh experienced extensive participation in the 1857 Revolt. This was primarily driven by the region's annexation under the Doctrine of Lapse, which incited the displeasure of local rulers and nobility. Concurrently, peasants, artisans, and soldiers harbored grievances related to elevated taxation, oppressive practices, and land seizures. Sepoys originating from Awadh were particularly instrumental in the rebellion, having been directly impacted by British policies and consequently fueling the widespread uprising.
